In April of 2015, I was hit by a car while pushing down my broken down car on the freeway.
As far as I know, my body was flung across 20 feet into the air.
I was hospitalized for a month, and I spent another month recovering in an intensive rehab center in my hometown. In terms of physicality, I came out of the accident pretty lucky. My friend, who was involved in the accident with me, received an incomplete spinal injury and multiple fractures to the skull.
I broke my nose, jaw, collarbone but I received a serious traumatic brain injury.
I suffered from all the symptoms of a severe traumatic brain injury. I dealt with short-term memory loss, persistent headaches, sleeping more than usual, quick fatigue, and difficulty sleeping...
Insomnia After My Brain Injury
Brain injuries are hard to describe. When you suffer from a brain injury, a lot of things are thrown off balance. Fresh off the accident, I could not even walk! After a neurological examination, I had gait instability where my ability to balance while walking was thrown off because of my head injury. It was the weirdest thing--not being able to walk straight.
My sleep schedule was also thrown off balance. After I was released from the intensive rehab center and I was sent home, I noticed I had a really hard time falling asleep at night. In the hospital and intensive rehab center, I had never really noticed it but after I was sent home, it became really apparent to me how hard it was to fall asleep when it was time to.
I would lay down in bed after a long day and I would not be able to fall asleep. It was torturous… Imagine laying down for hours on end after it was time to go to bed. The best way to describe the way it feels would be to say like it was one of those days where you have too much caffeine before bed and you just lay down hoping to fall asleep...except this would happen almost every night.
I got into this bad habit of just getting out of bed, going to my living room and binge-watching shows in Netflix until I was ready to fall asleep. I would go through heaps of shows. I ran through multiple seasons of popular television shows such as Friends, How I Met Your Mother, Breaking Bad...
Sometimes, when I didn't watch shows late at night, I would wake up in the middle of the night a couple of times and be exhausted in the morning.
I tried taking melatonin, a natural substance in our bodies, to help with my sleep cycle. I tried listening to relaxing music or podcasts while I laid in bed. I tried exercising before bed...but nothing seemed to be working...
Discovering the Benefits of CBD Oil
After going through a list of potential remedies, I learned about CBD oil. Joe Rogan mentioned it in the Joe Rogan Podcast, a podcast hosted by American comedian, Joe Rogan. CBD oil is actually called Cannabidiol and it is a popular natural remedy used to treat ordinary ailments. CBD has several compounds found in cannabis or weed.
At the time, I was terrified of taking any stimulants because I did not want to make my head injury worse. However, after diligent research, I discovered that elements in canabis actually helped reduce the effects of a brain injury following trauma. This included insomnia.
In another study done by the British Journal of Pharmacology, they associated cannabinoids to a noteworthy reduction in cell demise inside the brain subsequent to a brain injury.
After a year of restless nights, I decided to give it a shot. I went to my local dispensary in California (cannabis ie legal in the State of California) and bought some CBD oil. I was never a big fan of marijuana so I solely used it to help me fall asleep. The first night I tried the oil, I slept like a baby.
I was so relieved. I no longer had to stay up for agonizing hours on end every night! The next night I used it to help me fall asleep, and the next night. I was cognizant of not allowing myself to become so reliant on the CBD oil and I slowly weaned myself off of it. I used it less and less until… I no longer needed it!
Now, I am glad my sleep schedule is back in balance. I can get a good nights sleep in and be more productive the following day. I still take naps during the day because I fatigue quicker but, I am grateful that I am able to fall asleep at night now. I hope more and more people look into the benefits of using CBD oil as it has many other therapeutic use cases and healing properties for various other ailments!
